Distinction Recognizes Outstanding Contributions to Advancement of Field

Dr. Jeffrey Gonzalez, professor of psychology at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology and a member of the departments of medicine and epidemiology and population health at YU-affiliated Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been named a fellow of the Society of Behavioral Medicine.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Gonzalez

The distinction is conferred by the Society on members in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of the science and practice of behavioral medicine, an interdisciplinary field combining both medicine and psychology, with the view that health problems can be influenced by behavioral, psychological, and social factors, in addition to biomedical factors.

“Professor Gonzalez is to be congratulated for this significant achievement in his career, which is in  recognition of his scholarly work in the area of psychological issues related to diabetes,” said Dr. Lawrence J. Siegel, dean of Ferkauf. “Dr. Gonzalez joins a very select group of academics in this very prestigious interdisciplinary professional society.”

Gonzalez’s research focuses on identifying psychological and cognitive factors involved in treatment adherence in chronic illness, such as diabetes. He has a particular interest in understanding how beliefs about illness and treatment relate to illness self-management, and how depression and distress are associated with worse outcomes in chronic illness.

“I am very pleased to be recognized by the Society of Behavioral Medicine with the award of fellow status,” said Gonzalez. “The Society has been a longstanding part of my entry and advancement in the field of behavioral medicine. I attended my first professional conference when I presented a poster at a Society meeting in San Diego, California, during my senior year of college and continued to attend and present regularly, through my graduate training as a health psychologist, my early career as an investigator, and now attending with my own Ferkauf graduate students. I feel honored to be named among the leaders who inspired my own career trajectory and hope that this recognition will bring even more attention to Ferkauf for the excellent PhD training we provide in Clinical Health Psychology.”

In November, Gonzalez was named a fellow of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research.
